Impeachment article hearings, Geminid meteor shower, 'Richard Jewell' hits theaters: 5 things to know Friday - USA TODAY

Abrupt ending pushes House vote on impeachment to Friday

After a grueling day of proceedings that went on for over 14 hours, the House Judiciary Committee will reconvene Friday morning to vote on the two articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. Since the committee features 24 Democrats and just 17 Republicans, it appears poised to approve the abuse of power and obstruction of Congress articles. If the panel adopts one or both articles, it would be for only the fourth time in history and the first since President Bill Clinton in 1998. The end of Thursday's hearing featured a jolting twist and a lot of drama. The decision from Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., to give lawmakers time to "search their conscience" stunned and angered Republican lawmakers who thought votes would happen Thursday night. .

Wintry sky show: Geminid meteor shower peaks Friday

Bundle up and get ready for one of the year's top meteor showers. The Geminids shower — so named because the meteors seem to emanate from the constellation Gemini — peaks Friday night into Saturday morning, according to AccuWeather astronomy blogger Dave Samuhel. NASA calls the Geminids "one of the best and most reliable of the annual meteor showers." One hitch this year: Light from the nearly full moon will wash out some of the dimmer meteors. For best results, look slightly away from Gemini so you can see meteors with longer "tails" streak by, says Sky & Telescope.

Conservative Party wins majority in UK Parliament. Is Brexit next?

While results are still rolling, Britain’s Conservative Party secured a majority in Parliament against opposition parties who wanted to delay Britain's departure from the European Union or even cancel it altogether. As of early Friday, Conservatives had claimed 326 of 650 seats in the House of Commons and appeared headed to the party's best election performance since 1987. The elections come amid allegations of disinformation campaigns and falsehoods disseminated by the main political parties and  likely paves the way for Boris Johnson to push through Brexit on Jan. 31 after three years of divisive and acrimonious debate by lawmakers.

'Richard Jewell' hits theaters amid growing backlash

Clint Eastwood's new film "Richard Jewell" opens nationwide Friday amid criticism regarding the representation of a real-life character. The film tells the story of security guard Richard Jewell (played by Paul Walter Hauser), who quickly went from hero to prime suspect — he was later was exonerated of any suspicion — in the 1996 deadly Summer Olympics bombing in Atlanta's Centennial Olympic Park. Olivia Wilde, who plays real-life journalist Kathy Scruggs in the biopic, took to Twitter to passionately defend her controversial role, especially a scene which implies the reporter traded sex for information from an FBI official (played by Jon Hamm).

Presidents Cup: After disastrous Day 1, Team USA bounces back

Just when it looked like the International team would run away with the Presidents Cup, the Americans fought back thanks to some 18th green theatrics. Led by Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, Team USA stayed in the fight during the second day of play at Royal Melbourne. Both sides earned 2½ points Friday in Australia (Thursday night in North America), and the Internationals will enter a busy third day with a 6½-3½ advantage in the biennial competition. The action resumes at 3 p.m. ET Friday on Golf Channel.
